CRYSTAL TATE
Crystal Tate is an Australian visual artist whose work has been recognised for its emotional depth, confident use of colour, and strong sense of place.
She graduated with a High Distinction in Visual Art, with her work selected to tour as part of ARTEXPRESS 2003, one of New South Wales’ most competitive and prestigious exhibitions for young artists. The exhibited work was subsequently offered acquisition into the Wilkins Collection, a permanent collection of outstanding HSC artworks, marking an early acknowledgement of the strength and collectability of her practice.
Since then, Crystal has held sell-out solo exhibitions, with her work consistently acquired by private collectors. She continues to exhibit in curated hospitality and public-facing spaces, recognising their role as contemporary galleries — environments where art is experienced repeatedly, lived with, and remembered.
Crystal’s work has also been recognised through selective professional collaboration. The founders of Designer Boys Art encountered her work while on holiday and extended an invitation to license pieces for inclusion in their curated collection. From this invitation, Crystal chose a small number of works that now form the exclusive ‘Tidal Towns’ collection, available only through Designer Boys Art — affirming her work’s suitability for curated, design-oriented markets. Her designer profile can be viewed on the Designer Boys Art website.
Crystal’s practice centres on drawing landscapes as they exist in our minds, part real, part imagined- a vista a photograph can never quite capture. Her whimsical, colourful style focuses on the way the landscape feels when you are there. Inspired by the artist David Hockney, who has been creating works on his iPad for a number of years. Crystal also uses this medium as a contemporary art making tool. On the iPad, each mark is added by hand, in carefully considered layers but also with a beautiful randomness depending on the brush selected. These works, which are always intended to be printed, are released in both open and limited edition format. The first print of each edition is, as far as it goes- the original. After creating a considerable body of work in this style, Crystal craved the rich textures and brush strokes that can only be created by paint- and so her latest exploration has her completing the work partially on her iPad and then finishing it as a mixed media original on either fine art paper or premium canvas.
Alongside gallery exhibitions, Crystal maintains a direct relationship with her audience through select creative markets and exhibitions, offering collectors the opportunity to engage with the artist and the work firsthand.
